Opening Day -2008

Opening Day went well for us. I got my
first scaup and three teal, Jim got three
teal, and Dave got one teal.

We hunted an area where I've seen
ducks before but never thought was all
that huntable. There were a lot of
tour airboats to keep birds working
and I bought a mojo decoy this
year that really seemed to work.

Of course, for the scaup, I had
these special decoys - very life like.
In case you can't tell, the scaup is
in the center of the picture.

Yep, Mojo decoys are special... and right at the top of my Christmas list! We finally gave up this morning with no ducks -- even though they were everywhere, they were funneling in to the spread 150 yds. downriver where the guy had one out.

I don't get the part with the tennis shoes, but bluebills sure do eat nicely, don't they?

The local name for bluebills
down here is "Flying Shoes."
Everyone has warned me about
how bad these fish eaters
taste. They are mostly shot
on salt water in this area,
but mine was on fresh. I
marinated the breasts in
Italian dressing and slow
cooked it on the grill. It
really turned out great.
